a) Cultural life in a big city and a small town or a village

There are usually many opportunities for cultural life in a large town.

Different kinds of performances are shown in the theatre, for example  a drama,a comedy,an opera, a musical or a ballet.  If you want to see a performance in the theatre, you should buy your ticket in advance. People are usually well dressed. Women are wearing an evening dress and men a dark suit.

We can admire exhibitions of classical or modern art in an art gallery. There can be found various photographs, paintings and sculptures.

Some of people go to a museum to learn about the history of the country. The exhibited things show us how people used to live in the past.

If you like classical music, you can enjoy a concert of philharmonic orchestra in a concert hall or attend a festival. There are also many concerts of modern music in summer. Especially young people prefer these pop concerts. Slovakia is famous for its tradition of folklore music.

In most small towns and villages people don´t have any cinemas, theatres or galleries. There can be usually found a house of culture. Inhabitants organize discos or balls on special occasions – on the first of May or at Christmas. Villagers have to travel to the nearest town to see a good film or they can borrow a DVD and watch it at home. 

b) Culture and art and famous personalities

If we want to speak about culture and art, we should mention literature, fine arts and performing arts. Literature includes novels, short stories, biographies, drama and poetry.

Fine arts are referring to painting, sculpture and architecture. Performing arts are represented by dance, opera, cinema, theatre, ballet and concerts. The general task of art and culture is mainly to entertain and educate.

Famous personalities in culture and arts:

• Music

Elvis Presley was the king of rock-and-roll.

The Beatles was an English music group well known in the whole world.

• Theatre and cinema

 Charlie Chaplin was an American actor of the “Silent Era”.

Walt Disney represented animated cartoon films.

• Fine art

Andy Warhol is the son of Slovak immigrants and famous painter. 

c) The visit of an cultural event

I went to a cinema in Bratislava a week ago. I was there with my friends. First, we had to buy our tickets and then the film started. We chose the action film „Fast and furious 6“, directed by Justin Lin. My favourite actor Vin Diesel stars the film. The story is about the gang, which is all retired now because Brian and Mia have a new baby. However, Agent Luke Hobbs tracks down Dom Toretto (Vin Diesel) with some startling news: His girlfriend, Letty, who had been presumed dead, is very much alive. She's now working for international bad guy Shaw, whom Hobbs is trying to catch. Therefore, Hobbs, Dom, and the rest of Dom's old team join forces to take down the villain and bring Letty home. This film was gripping from the beginning until the end and we really enjoyed the film because we love fast cars and action. 

d) Festivals

Music festivals are the most popular cultural events among young people. Live pop concerts are held especially in summer at sports stadiums, open-air theatres or even in a field because of hundreds of fans. You can listen to many types of music like rock, pop, punk, reggae, hip-hop etc. Our region offers young people Summer Beach Rudava. They can dance, listen to various kinds of music, but also play volleyball there. Visitors of these festivals usually sleep in a tent. There are also people, who like folklore music. Folklore groups dressed in traditional costumes dance at folklore festivals from which the most famous is the one held in July in Východná. The most, well known, film festival in the world is the Cannes Film Festivals. Other important and prestigious film festivals include that held in Berlin and Venice (the oldest film festival). 

e) Other kinds of art

Architecture is the art and science of designing buildings. It includes town planning, urban design, landscape architecture (developing of gardens, parks and other green outdoor spaces) and interior design (furniture). Most famous architects are Michelangelo, Leonardo Da Vinci, Friedensreich Hundertwasser. Paintings of famous painters and sculptors such as Picasso, Van Gogh or Michelangelo are immortal and their artworks can be seen in a number of museums around the world (The National Gallery, The Tate Gallery, in London). Visitors to Bratislava can admire the colour paintings, landscapes, portraits and other works of arts in the Slovak National Gallery or the Bratislava City Gallery.
